Security & Safety Measures at RSHA

Clearances & Background Checks

  • All instructors and staff must pass a criminal background check before serving in any capacity.
  • Background checks are required to ensure the safety and security of all students.

Entrance Policy

  • Use the double-door entrance at the rear of the building on academy days.
  • Do not prop open any doors unless actively supervised by another adult or parent.
  • Alternative entrances may be used only when moving items in or out, with supervision.

Guests & Visitors

  • Only prospective students may visit classes—with prior instructor approval.
  • All guests (students, parents, faculty, church members) must sign in at the rear welcome table.
  • Only paid church staff are exempt from signing in.
  • RSHA will coordinate with church leadership to encourage member sign-ins on academy days.

Security & Safety

  • On-site security personnel help maintain a safe campus environment.
  • The safety team is trained in situational awareness and emergency response.
  • All safety team members have passed background checks.

Injuries at Co-Op

  • Incident reports are required for any injury beyond a basic Band-Aid—even if a parent is present.
  • Teachers, assistants, or observing parents should complete the report.

Safety Team & Zone Monitoring

  • Safety and parent assistants monitor zones for cleanliness and emergencies.
  • Reports may be requested from involved parties for any incident or safety concern.
  • Some team members have VA Concealed Weapons Permits and may be armed during academy hours.
  • The safety team rotates based on availability and the class schedule.

Illness Policy

  • Do not attend the academy if you or your child has had vomiting, diarrhea, or a fever of 100.5°F+ within the past 24 hours.
  • Students under 13 may attend if supervised by another parent or a sibling over age 17.
  • Students 13 and older may be dropped off but must have a designated guardian on campus.
  • Family representatives (like grandparents) are welcome if they follow handbook policies.

Interaction Guidelines

  • Students and adults should never be alone together behind closed doors or out of sight from others.
  • This applies to both adult-student and student-student interactions.
  • Always act to preserve the integrity, safety, and reputation of all parties involved.

Adult Supervision Required

Parents should be aware of where their children are in class during each period and gain familiarity with the facility to understand how to access their children. Roanoke Salem Homeschool Academy will make every effort to keep students in areas with adult supervision. However, we need the support of the parents to make this possible. Please encourage your children to stay in supervised areas of the building.

As the co-op grows, we will be able to use more of the facility more frequently. The church is willing to work with us to grow our program and allow us to use their facility for free. Let’s work together to express our appreciation by taking great care of the facility for years to come!
