Foundations of Psych. (9th-12th)

This engaging and interactive course introduces students to the foundational concepts of psychology, including the biological basis of behavior, psychological disorders, and the philosophical roots and historical development of the discipline. Designed for students new to the subject or exploring careers in social sciences, the course provides a broad overview that encourages curiosity and critical thinking.

Course Overview:

  • Introduction to Psychology:
    Gain an understanding of major psychological theories, thinkers, and historical developments.
  • Biological Psychology:
    Explore how the brain and nervous system influence behavior, thought, and emotion.
  • Abnormal Psychology:
    Learn about psychological disorders, their symptoms, and general approaches to treatment.
  • Philosophy of the Mind:
    Discuss how psychology intersects with philosophical questions about consciousness and human nature.
  • Student-Led Inquiry:
    Encourages students to help steer class discussions based on personal interests and real-life applications.

Additional Information

This course serves as an excellent introduction to psychology for high school students and allows them to explore how psychological insights can be used to better understand themselves and others. Emphasis is placed on real-world connections and practical reflection.

Since West Salem has NEVER CHARGED for the use of their facility (i.e. no rent, utilities, water, internet, or paper product fees; ONLY a nominal cleaning fee), there will be no facility or maintenance fees required. In order to respect your time and resources, we plan to offer regular lunches for a small charge with all proceeds going to West Salem Baptist Church as our love offering to them for such a generous gift.
