Middle School Creative Writing (6th-8th)

"Middle School Creative Writing" is an immersive course designed to introduce students to the vibrant world of creative writing. This course focuses primarily on fiction writing, while also exploring poetry and creative non-fiction. Through this exploration, students will develop their writing skills and gain an understanding of different literary genres and techniques.

  • Exploration of Genres:
Students will delve into various genres including poetry, fiction, and creative non-fiction, with a special focus on fiction writing.
  • Technical Writing Skills:
Learn key writing techniques such as formatting dialogue, understanding the three points of view (first, second, and third), and mastering different poem forms.
  • Character Development and More:
Study overarching literary concepts like character development through selected readings and targeted exercises.
  • In-Class Writing Exercises:
Participate in writing exercises designed to enhance creativity and skill without the obligation to share work publicly, although opportunities to share will be available.
  • End-of-Year Portfolio:
The course will culminate in a portfolio that showcases students’ creative work in their preferred genres.

Grades will be based on participation in class discussions, completion of readings and responses, and dedication to writing projects. This course offers a safe space for students to explore and experiment with their writing, encouraging growth through creative expression without fear of failure. Students are required to bring a notebook for writing exercises and any desired note-taking.
