Filmmaking & Production (9th-12th)

This Filmmaking & Production course introduces students to the complete filmmaking process, from developing an idea to producing a finished short film. Students will explore the art of visual storytelling while learning practical skills in camera operation, composition, lighting, sound, editing, scriptwriting, and acting. Emphasis is placed on creating compelling stories that communicate ideas clearly and creatively.

Through weekly hands-on projects, students will immediately apply the techniques discussed in class using their own equipment. During the final five weeks of the semester, students will collaborate to plan, film, edit, and present original short films that will premiere during a semester-ending mini film festival for the co-op.

Course Overview:

  • Visual Storytelling:
    Learn how great films capture attention through strong storytelling, thoughtful composition, pacing, and cinematic techniques.
  • Production Skills:
    Develop practical experience with camera operation, lighting, framing, sound recording, directing, and basic acting techniques.
  • Editing & Post-Production:
    Learn the fundamentals of video editing, sound design, transitions, titles, and polishing a project into a finished production.
  • Weekly Creative Projects:
    Complete short video assignments that reinforce the skills learned each week and encourage experimentation and creativity.
  • Semester Film Project:
    Apply everything learned by planning, filming, editing, and presenting an original short film during the class's end-of-semester Film Festival.

Student Requirements

  • A smartphone with a camera or a dedicated video camera.
  • A laptop (preferred) or iPad capable of editing video.
  • Ability to bring editing device to class each week.
  • Notebook and writing utensils for notes, planning, and script development.

This course is designed to work with equipment students already own. Modern smartphones are capable of producing excellent video, and students will learn techniques that apply equally well to phones and dedicated cameras.

Classroom Equipment: Instruction requires a projector or large display for presentations and film examples, along with speakers capable of playing audio for the class.
