Choir (6th – 12th)

Choral Ensemble & Music Appreciation gives students the opportunity to grow as singers, listeners, and musicians in a Christ-centered setting. Students will begin by learning to listen carefully to the beauty of God's creation and to develop a deeper love for music. They will also learn how to care for their voices, warm up properly, sing with healthy technique, and participate well in an ensemble setting.

Throughout the year, students will study basic music theory as it applies to vocal ensemble work, practice good musicianship, and explore selected topics in classical music appreciation and music history. Students will be asked to listen to required pieces outside of class for familiarity and may use music journaling to reflect on what they hear and learn. The class will include one or two performance opportunities for the co-op.

Course Overview:

  • Healthy Vocal Technique:
Learn how to care for the voice, warm up properly, and sing in ways that help prevent strain or injury.
  • Ensemble Singing:
Develop listening skills, blend, balance, timing, and confidence while singing with others.
  • Music Theory for Singers:
Study basic music theory concepts that support choral singing, sight-reading, rhythm, pitch, and musical expression.
  • Music Appreciation and History:
Explore selected works, composers, and periods of classical music while learning how to listen with attention and understanding.
  • Performance and Reflection:
Students will prepare for one or two co-op performances and may complete music journal reflections based on assigned listening.
