Greek 1 (9th – 12th) 2 Hour Course

Greek 1 is designed for students with little or no prior experience with the Greek language. Students will begin by learning the Greek alphabet, foundational vocabulary, and essential grammar while developing the skills needed to read both Classical and Koine Greek. Using a unified approach, students will encounter selections from Greek antiquity, the Septuagint, the Greek New Testament, and the writings of the early Church Fathers. Translation work is introduced early in the course to cultivate confidence and foster a love for one of history's most influential languages.

Course Overview:

  • Greek Alphabet and Foundations:
Learn the Greek alphabet, pronunciation, vocabulary, and core grammatical concepts that form the foundation of reading Greek texts.
  • Classical and Biblical Greek:
Study both Classical and Koine Greek through a unified approach, preparing students to read a wide range of ancient literature and biblical texts.
  • Translation from the Beginning:
Begin translating Greek early in the course, developing reading comprehension and confidence through guided practice.
  • Greek as a Living Language:
Read texts aloud in class and memorize portions of Scripture, including The Lord's Prayer and selected Psalms, to experience Greek as a spoken language.
  • Preparation for Advanced Study:
Build a strong foundation for future study of Classical Greek, Biblical Greek, Church History, Theology, or Modern Greek.
