Advanced Sewing (6th–12th)

Advanced Sewing is designed for students in grades 6–12 who are already familiar with the basics of sewing. Students should be comfortable with hand stitching and using a machine and should be able to take the initiative in their own sewing projects. Sewing 1 is not a prerequisite for this course, as long as a student has a good grounding in the basics of sewing. Material from Sewing 1 will not be repeated.

Course Overview:

  • Student-Directed Projects:
Students will select their own projects to bring to class with all the supplies needed. This gives them the opportunity to work on projects that truly interest them in a supportive classroom environment.
  • Building Independence:
Choosing and managing their own projects helps encourage students to be independent and take initiative in sewing, promoting a lifelong love of the craft.
  • Advanced Skills:
Since basic skills have already been covered, students will progress to more challenging work such as garment construction, doll clothes, fashion accessories, quilting, and working with a wider range of materials.
  • Guided Problem-Solving:
Working under supervision allows students to push past difficulties and challenges they encounter, building real confidence in their abilities.
  • Creative Expression:
The main goal of this class is for students to have the confidence to pursue sewing on their own and in whatever direction interests them. Sewing allows for great creativity and artistic expression, and this class helps students move past the hardest part, getting started.

Additional Information

Sewing machines will be available in class, but students are welcome to bring their own machines. Students will purchase their own project materials, though the classroom will be stocked with thread and basic supplies.

Course Cost: $21 / month

Materials Fee: $10 per student

This fee is lower than Sewing 1 because students will purchase their own project materials. The fee covers thread and basic classroom supplies.
