This high school literature course takes students on a chronological journey through the major literary movements, from Classical literature to Postmodernism. As students read selections from some of history’s greatest authors, they will discover how historical events, cultural shifts, and changing worldviews shaped the themes, styles, and ideas found in literature. From the epic poetry of Homer and the plays of Shakespeare to the novels of the Brontë sisters, the fiction of F. Scott Fitzgerald, and the thought-provoking works of Franz Kafka, students will explore how literature has both reflected and influenced civilization throughout history.
Students should bring a laptop and a literary journal to class each week. All required readings, handouts, and assignments will be provided as PDFs through Google Classroom, so no additional textbook purchase is required. This course is ideal for students who enjoy reading, thoughtful discussion, and discovering how great literature has shaped—and been shaped by—the world throughout history.
