High School Physics (9th – 12th)

Physics is the study of motion, energy, forces, light, electricity, sound, space, and matter. Almost everything we interact with each day depends on physics in some way. This high school physics course will help students understand not only what happens in the physical world, but why it happens. Physics is not simply about memorizing formulas or plugging numbers into equations. It is about learning to think logically, break down difficult problems, look for patterns, and use evidence and data to understand how the universe works.

This first physics course will focus primarily on motion, forces, and energy, with possible additional study in sound and waves. Students will learn how to approach problems step by step, interpret data, apply mathematical reasoning, and connect physics concepts to real-world situations. Physics is basically the universe's instruction manual, and this course is designed to help students read it with confidence.

Course Overview:

  • Motion and Forces:
Study velocity, acceleration, Newton's laws of motion, gravity, friction, momentum, and the ways forces affect objects in motion.
  • Energy and Work:
Explore kinetic energy, potential energy, work, power, conservation of energy, simple machines, and how energy moves through physical systems.
  • Problem-Solving Skills:
Learn how to think logically, break complex problems into smaller steps, identify patterns, use formulas correctly, and support conclusions with evidence.
  • Labs and Real-World Applications:
Participate in demonstrations, hands-on activities, measurements, data collection, graphing, and experiments that connect physics concepts to everyday life.
  • Consistent Practice and Preparation:
Students will be expected to complete homework regularly, review concepts throughout the week, and come prepared for class. Physics becomes much harder when students wait until the day before class to do the work.

Additional Information

Course Cost: $19 / month

Materials Fee: TBD

This fee may cover lab supplies, experiment materials, measurement tools, printed resources, and other classroom materials used throughout the year.

Students should expect regular homework and practice. Every student begins the course with an A and spends the rest of the year defending it through preparation, participation, and consistent effort.
