Literacy Foundations Lang Arts (2nd-3rd)

Elementary Language Arts for 2nd and 3rd Graders offers a rich and engaging experience centered on classic literature, moral storytelling, and foundational grammar. Students will explore poems, short stories, and even selections from Shakespeare to uncover timeless themes where virtue triumphs and wrongdoing is not overlooked. This course fosters a love for reading and an intuitive understanding of goodness, truth, and beauty.

Course Overview:

  • Wholesome Literature Exploration
    Students will read works by Nathaniel Hawthorne, George MacDonald, Charlotte M. Yonge, E.B. White, and others—meeting literary heroes and discovering timeless truths through story.
  • Grammar and Style Practice
    Through reflective writing and weekly copywork, students will analyze grammar, phonics, syntax, and literary structure in a hands-on way.
  • In-Class Reading & Text Analysis
    Much of the reading and discussion will happen in class, with opportunities for students to reflect, question, and engage in lively conversation.
  • Memory Work and Copywork
    Students will memorize selections from literature and scripture while copying beautiful and meaningful passages that reinforce grammar and style.
  • No Textbook Purchase Required
    Most materials are public domain and will be accessed via Project Gutenberg, LibriVox, or used copies from sources like ThriftBooks. All worksheets and assignments will be provided by the instructor.

Additional Information

This course is designed to build a deep appreciation for literature, instill a sense of virtue, and strengthen foundational writing and grammar skills. Weekly reading, writing, and copywork assignments will complement in-class activities. A full book list will be provided before the course begins.

Since West Salem has NEVER CHARGED for the use of their facility (i.e. no rent, utilities, water, internet, or paper product fees; ONLY a nominal cleaning fee), there will be no facility or maintenance fees required. In order to respect your time and resources, we plan to offer regular lunches for a small charge with all proceeds going to West Salem Baptist Church as our love offering to them for such a generous gift.
