2023-2024 Course Descriptions

Art Grades K-4

In this art class for K-4, students will explore various art forms such as drawing, painting, collage, and sculpture. Each class will begin with an introduction to the art form or artist we will be studying, followed by hands-on activities to practice techniques and create unique works of art. The goal is to encourage creativity and self-expression while developing a love for art in a fun and engaging environment.

Art Grades 5-8

In this art class for grades 5-8, students will explore various art techniques and mediums, including painting, drawing, and sculpture. They will learn about art history and theory, as well as develop their own creative ideas and styles through individual and group projects.

Art Grades 9-12

We will begin class exploring various drawing techniques covering a range of subjects from people, objects, landscapes, and abstract forms. As the year progresses we will add in elements of color to our work and experiment with different mediums. Students will be encouraged to try all mediums once and note which ones inspire the most creativity in them. The goal of this class is to grow the students love of art and empower them to boldly find their style.

Health and Fitness Grades 5-8

Students will learn a balanced approach to overall health and fitness in this class. We will practice cardiovascular exercise, strength training, and flexibility. We will also learn about nutrition and healthy lifestyles. Students will be encouraged to participate, do their best, have a positive attitude, and try to improve their overall health.

A physical fitness assessment will be given in the fall as a health baseline and to identify focus areas for improvement. Each student will set personal physical activity goals and nutrition goals based on the results of the initial assessment. Students will work toward their goals throughout the year (in and out of class), and a second physical fitness assessment will be given in the spring to gauge progress. The focus of this class is on the process of creating a healthy lifestyle, not on the results of these physical fitness assessments!

Students are expected to show up ready to work out! Comfortable clothing should be worn, but it should not be too tight-fitting. Consider wearing layers if it is cold outside. T-shirts or other athletic shirts are required and must stay on for the entire class. Proper sneakers or tennis shoes must be worn. Also, please bring a water bottle to each class.

Chemistry Grades 8-12

In this chemistry class for grades 11-12, students will explore the fundamental principles of chemistry through hands-on experiments, discussions, and problem-solving activities. They will cover topics such as atomic structure, chemical bonding, reactions, and thermodynamics, building a foundation for further study in college or a career in a chemistry-related field.

Exploring the 50 States Grades 2-5

We will journey through the 50 states of our country. The goal will be for students to identify the states and capitals while learning a little history and fun facts about each along the way. It will be an engaging class using hands-on activities, music, games, and literature.

Middle School IEW Grades 6-8

Structure and Style for Students: Year 1 Level B Premier is a two-semester writing journey using IEW’s Structure and Style Approach. Students reading at a Grade 6 to Grade 8 level will enjoy these creative, incremental, and effective writing lessons. The curriculum features daily assignments, creative writing opportunities, and grammar lessons. Your student(s) will engage in the writing process by learning about topics, drafts, revising, editing, and publishing their original work. They will learn how to write successfully and prepare for higher level writing. We hope you join us in becoming confident and capable writers!

Chess Club Grades 6-12

The chess club for grades 6-12 is a group of students who meet regularly to learn and play chess. The club provides a fun and educational environment where members can improve their chess skills, participate in tournaments, and build lasting friendships with fellow homeschoolers.

Bible Survey Grades 9-12

The Bible Survey class for grades 9-12 will provide an overview of the Gospel as presented through the entire Bible, from Genesis to Revelation, with a focus on understanding the historical context, key themes, and major events and characters. Students will also explore the relevance of biblical teachings to contemporary issues and engage in discussions.

YouTube Media Grades 8-12

In this YouTube Media Production class for grades 8-12, students will learn the skills needed to produce engaging and professional-quality videos for YouTube. They will cover topics such as scriptwriting, filming, editing, and promotion, and will have the opportunity to create their own original content while receiving feedback and guidance from the instructor.

Baking Grades 5-8

The baking class for grades 5-8 is a fun and engaging way for students to learn about the art and science of baking. Led by an experienced baker, students will learn a variety of techniques and recipes, including bread making, cake decorating, and pastry creation.

Quilting Grades 6-12

This quilting class is designed for students in grades 6-12 and teaches the art of quilting, including techniques such as piecing, appliqué, and quilting by hand or machine. Students will learn the history and cultural significance of quilting while developing their creativity and sewing skills to create beautiful, functional works of art.

Introduction to Engineering Grades 8-12

This class for grades 8-12 is designed to teach students the different areas of the engineering field. It will also teach the principles an engineer uses in the design process as well as the thinking skills needed to make adjustments to their design. Students will design, build, and test complex structures and ideas using a variety of tools and techniques. The course will cover topics such as problem-solving, modeling and simulation, optimization, and project management. The students will have the opportunity to work on some real-world engineering projects

Spanish 1 Grades 9-10

Spanish 1 for grades 9-10 will cover the basics of the Spanish language, including grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, and basic communication skills. Students willlearn through a combination of textbooks, online resources, and interactive activities such as role-playing, listening exercises, and writing assignments. The class may also include cultural lessons to provide students with a broader understanding of Spanish-speaking countries and their customs.

Spanish 2 Grades 11-12

Spanish 2 for grades 11-12 will build on the foundations established in Spanish 1, with an increased focus on grammar, vocabulary, and cultural competence. Students will engage in activities such as reading and discussing Spanish-language literature, watching and analyzing Spanish-language films, and practicing their oral and written communication skills through conversations and writing assignments.

Kindergarten & 1st Grade

In the K/1 class for ages 5-6, students will learn and review basic skills such as letter recognition, phonics, and counting through interactive and engaging activities such as songs, games, and crafts. The curriculum will also include age-appropriate topics such as science, social studies, and art to promote well-rounded learning.

General Science Grades 6-8

Apologia’s Exploring Creation with General Science, 3rd Edition, is designed to be the first course of middle school and walks students through the transition from elementary to middle school sciences. This General Science course gives students an understanding of the world that surrounds them so they can appreciate the real-world relevance of scientific inquiry and the beauty of Creation.

Biology Grades 9-10

In this lab based Biology class for grades 9-10, students will study the fundamentals of life sciences, including cell biology, genetics, and ecology. Through hands on experiments, observations, dissections, microscopy, observations, and research projects, students will gain a comprehensive understanding of the biological world and its interrelatedness with the environment.

Pre-Algebra Grades 7-8

The Pre-algebra class for grades 7-8 will cover essential concepts such as arithmetic operations with integers, rational numbers, and algebraic expressions. Students will also learn about linear equations, inequalities, and functions, providing a solid foundation for further math studies. The class will involve a combination of theoretical explanations, problem-solving exercises, and interactive activities to keep students engaged and help them develop a deep understanding of pre-algebra.

Algebra 1 Grades 9-10

Algebra 1 class for grades 9-10 typically covers fundamental concepts such as solving linear equations, graphing functions, and manipulating polynomials. The class may also delve into more advanced topics such as systems of equations, inequalities, metric conversions, scientific notation, and exponents, pre-calculus in Math-U-See. Students will view Math-U-See ~20 minute teaching video and/or work through textbook problems in instructional manual, prepare any questions to ask in class, complete worksheets, weekly focused tests and quarterly review tests, and participate in virtual discussions and problem-solving sessions with the instructor when student requests further help.

Geometry Grades 9-12

Students will explore the properties and relationships of shapes, lines, and angles in two and three dimensions. The curriculum will cover topics such as area, volume, pythagorean theorem, congruence, similarity, coordinate geometry, and a brief view of trigonometric functions, with a focus on developing critical thinking skills and mathematical reasoning. Learning will require students to begin each new chapter at home - reading/studying the instructional manual and viewing the math-u-see teaching video, completing the first worksheet, and preparing questions they want to ask in class. After the in-class meeting, additional worksheets and the chapter’s weekly focused test are due that same week. Students may also participate in virtual discussions and problem-solving sessions with the instructor if/when further help is needed.

Intro to web design Grades 8-12

The website design and coding course for grades 8-12 is a comprehensive program that provides students with a solid foundation in website development, programming, and design principles. Through interactive lessons, hands-on projects, and real-world applications, students will learn to create dynamic and responsive websites using content management systems like WordPress and DotNetNuke. Some later projects will explore updating sites using HTML, CSS, some JavaScript, and other web development tools.

AP (Advanced Placement) English Classes Grades 11-12

  • Earn 6 college English/Composition credits for each AP class*

AP English Language and Composition (for 11th/12th graders; very advanced 10th graders)

(This class potentially earns you credit for College Composition 1 and 2; at Virginia Western, that’s ENG 111 and 112)

Quick Overview: This course focuses on rhetorical analysis. Students read/analyze nonfiction texts such as essays and speeches and learn to write effective arguments, including a short research paper. Students are given many opportunities to practice for the AP Exam.

Instructor: Ruth Winn (I have a Master’s degree in English and more than 20 years of experience teaching literature and composition at all levels, including high school and college. This will be my third year teaching AP English classes, and so far my students have performed very well on the AP Exam!)

American Literature and Composition, Honors Level Grades 9+

Instructor: Ruth Winn (I have a Master’s degree in English and more than 20 years of experience teaching literature and composition at all levels, including high school and college. I also bring a Christian worldview to the study of literature.)

Course Overview: In this course, students will learn how to

  • Read, analyze, interpret, and evaluate a wide variety of texts, mostly fiction
  • Construct clear thesis statements and use evidence and a line of reasoning to make convincing arguments
  • Write short research papers with MLA documentation
  • Write a variety of essays/projects using descriptive, narrative, expository, persuasive, and creative writing

Texts (tentative list): The Scarlet Letter, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, The Old Man and the Sea, The Crucible, To Kill a Mockingbird, Fahrenheit 451; a variety of poems, short stories, narratives, and essays by American authors; plus Shakespeare’s play Romeo and Juliet

Personal Finance Grades 8-12

Story of the World Grades 6-8

The Story of the World by Susan Wise Bauer. Volume 2: The Middle Ages The Story of the World covers human history from ancient times until the present. The text/class begins with the Fall of Rome and concludes with the world at the end of the 16th Century. Exciting exercises covering a variety of learning styles will help the student comprehend a wide range of concepts such as the growth of Christianity in Britain, the rise of Islam, Crusades, Renaissance, Reformation, and many more historically significant events. The class is designed for Grades 6-8.

PE Grades K-3

Physical Education classes are crucial for the development of K-3rd grade students as they provide opportunities to improve their physical, social, and cognitive skills through fun and engaging activities that promote a healthy and active lifestyle.

Preschool Ages 3 & 4

A preschool class aims to provide young children with an enjoyable and interactive learning environment that facilitates their development of essential skills and knowledge. This class will cover a broad range of topics including language, math, science, social studies, and art. Activities such as circle time, alphabet learning, counting, science and nature exploration, social studies, and arts and crafts will be included to help preschoolers develop foundational skills and knowledge.

Deborah Maynard teaching piano and voice lessons in Roanoke, VA for homeschoolers using classical and Charlotte Mason methods, in collaboration with local co-ops - , SALT Co-op, HERF, Home Educators of Rainbow Forest, Colonial Education Center, Biblical education, expo, Cornerstone classical academy, Colonial elementary, Botetourt county, blacksburg homeschool, arrow homeschool co-op, Grace Life Church

Deborah Maynard is an experienced piano and voice teacher with a passion for music and the uplifting impact of praise. She holds a B.M. degree in vocal music education with a minor concentration in piano from Covenant College. Throughout her homeschooling journey with her six children, Deborah has used music as a valuable tool to connect with history, literature, and philosophy, incorporating singing through the ages. In addition to teaching classes on worship, she has also provided private piano and voice instruction whenever possible. Deborah has shared her talents teaching logic and rhetoric choir classes at Faith Christian School for a number of years. She is excited to join RSHA students in exploring the joy of creating beautiful music and nurturing their musical abilities.

30-minute lessons will be offered on RSHA Mondays.
